Departures (おくりびと, Okuribito) is definitely a film you need to watch this summer. Winning the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film at the 2009 Oscars, the film brings you on through an emotional journey through the life of a devoted cellist, Daigo Kobayashi who against all odds had to quit his dream of becoming a professional cellist but later instead found passion in a job snubbed by most—in a career of encoffinement.
Departures is one of the rare films (coupled with a great soundtrack by Joe Hisashi) that questions life and death in a humble but charming way that leaves us to think—what would be your last goodbye be like? Joyfully heartbreaking, the film is going to leave some of you in tears.
So, what would be your last goodbye be like?
