Do East Malaysians in Borneo live on trees?

Earlier this afternoon, a commentator by the name of Emmanuele Lo left me a comment in response to my Weliveontreesâ„¢ concept which I felt its reply deserves its own entry here.

In his comment, he suggested that people might misunderstand and continue to ‘believe’ that East Malaysians do live on trees in Borneo. As much as I feel that these allegations come baseless, I have to admit that there is the possibility that certain people might misunderstand. The mentality of these individuals who still see East Malaysians in Borneo as still living on trees are certainly hopeless. Sorry to generalize the whole population but West Malaysians are the ones most often asking this question. Do you live on trees in Sabah Borneo? This matter is quite laughable in fact. A possible myth at best. Western films dating back to the 1920s even portrayed people in the jungles of Borneo living in huts instead of trees which raises the question. Who started the speculation that we lived on trees?

I firmly believe that ‘Weliveontreesâ„¢’ has the potential to be an exclusive brand name which needs to be further understood with a dash of humour instead of its literal meaning. At best, East Malaysians themselves need to see the lighter side on things like the British (they really know how to laugh at themselves; watch Little Britain and you will know what I mean).

Just to clarify, East Malaysians in Borneo never lived on trees.

If we did, our trees came with their own personal lift and escalator.

Do you know anyone who thinks that people in Borneo still live on trees?

 I tell you, I don’t know how long this myth is going on here… I heard of that question back 5 years ago, my sister studying at KL and people asked her about that question, until last year people ask me again…

@sksk Congratulations. You are among the many who knows the truth. Then again, am I getting the vibe that people ask the question with a dose of sarcasm?

I tell them that when I visit east Malaysia, I live on the big tree on the hill, plenty of food to hunt. We also have to send smoke signals to communicate with the rest of the world.
