My cousins call me ‘The Eagle’

Figure 1. Cousins and I

Little I knew of the consequences of showing my younger cousins a good time would lead to this. To the other adults, I was a giant ‘kid’ playing children’s games. To my younger cousins, I was The Eagle (老鹰).

Despite sounding like a triad’s nickname from a Hong Kong film rerun. The Eagle and ever quite often–The Hen are actually the roles I play with my little cousins in a classic chase game–eagle catch little chickens. The game’s purpose is for the hen to protect its chicks (lined up in a row behind the hen) from the eagle which will attempt to get past the hen.

Another game popular with them is Pepsi, Cola, One, Two, Three. The goal here is for each participant to take turns to touch/step/hit one’s foot with his/her own foot. A person loses when another person’s foot comes into contact with his/her. In all fairness, I lose in this game all the time. Because my younger cousins cheat instead.

Tag games: Ice Fire
Figure 2. A game of Ice Fire

Ice Fire is derived from the classic police catch thief chase game whereby the catcher will ‘ice’ someone in order to catch them. An ‘iced’ person is not to move unless he is ‘fire’ by another person. The goal is for the catcher to ‘ice’ everyone leaving no one to ‘fire’ them anymore. My cousins cheat a lot in this one too. I have never won a game to date. It sucks.

That said, it’s great fun to bond with my younger cousins when they don’t gang up and pester me to play with them right after dinner.

Do you play these games as a child?

It’s fun if the elder ones know how to spend quality time and have fun with the children, stress in life is killing us all. I enjoy being bullied by primary kids in church every weekend :)

Hi, I was looking back at my blogposts and I came across one which you have commented in before. :) That was like 3 years back.

Anyway, the answer to your post is that I still remember how to play those games. I believe I played those games everyday when I was in primary school if I was in the afternoon session. If we were to play it again (not as kids but teenagers), I think it would be quite fun.

As for the Ice Fire game, my friends and I called it ‘Ice and Water’. I never know why. Although it is Fire that melts the ice logically, we sticked to Water (which acts slower =.=). Hehe. I also know that my friends and I would cheat by pretending to be Iced. And slowly, save the others.
