Mind Your LanguageFigure 1. Opening graphics for Mind Your Language

A long time ago, before there was ASTRO or NTV7, before I was even aware about Mr Bean or Black Adder, I used to watch this British sitcom with my Dad. Mind Your Language revolves around a class of foreign students learning English. The comedy comes from the misunderstandings and the foreign students linguistic difficulties, widely known for its humourous take on national stereotypes.

Watch two clips I found on YouTube: Part 1 Part 2 Do you have any memories of this British sitcom? I remember the last repeat on television in Malaysia was in the early 1990s, right?

jMs: Glad that it jogged your memory a bit. Truth is, ‘one thousand apologies’ still stick with me to this day too.

Well, I just blogged about it not too long ago. I loved the series, bought the DVDs here and watched them in a single weekend! EXCELLENT!!

I remember that sitcom, watched it as a kid on TV3. Laughed my head off and learned some English (both good and bad, whereelse would you learn what cockney rhyms are?). I’ve been trying to find the series again but sadly x DVD compilation i guess. Funny characters, hillarious stereotyping, great casts and major mangling of English. If there is anywhere to get them I would like to know. I have all the series on VHS though, maybe they still work even with the fungus coating haha. They should show this again, it is a great english language teaching too, poking fun at how us foreigners tackle the language and how we can learn from our mistakes.

This programme is one of the best i’ve ever encountered in terms of concept and the sheer expertise of the cast. it accounted for a very many joyful evenings while i was growing up. The scriptwriters were wonderful.I am looking for the entire series on DVD. could you please point me in the right direction.

as a young girl i could recall how this wonderful sitcom rally my family together whenever it was on air. now as an adult and a specialist on culture, it is amazing how well it showed the immigrant diversity of Englang in those days. the issue of political correctness and stereotypes, i believe should be a personal thing. i noticed that people from the perceived cultural stereotypes i.e. indians, pakistanis e.t.c. enjoyed the show the most. There was a nigerian adaptation on national tv(NTA) called ” second chance” which was aimed at the intra-national cultural and language peculiarities of the nigerian people.

Yes, did it show in NTV7? I think no. It is in RTM2 – Retro at midnight. I saw some DVD shop in KL (Setapak Sri Rampai) for sell the DVD for all series n episodes. But very expensive $60 ringgit. In Singapore, it found that the DVD have problems in displaying the contents.

Great sitcom! New for me, as it was never on Spanish speaking countries TV. One doubt, what is it that the greek chap says in episode one referring to his work, he works with…….? Then he is corrected and says “tankers” What was the misproounced word? I shall appreciate your help!
Thanks
