One of the best advice I received when I started work was not to have too high expectations of other people. I have to admit it never occurred to me how true it was until I met Yien. Unrealistic expectations do nothing but bring us frustration in the long run. I learnt it the hard way, but once you get past it and start expecting less, you learn to live up to your own expectations as well.
Frankly, I used to find fault in everybody. Other people ’should’ be more considerate, more helpful, more this and less of that. The thing is people do not behave the way they ’should’. Yien knows this first hand — she has seen the worst of me. Luckily, she is quite the understanding one.
The truth is, with my expectations lowered, I’ve come to appreciate the smallest of things like receiving her sms when she is home safely or when she comes by the office unannounced. Hehe. Hope I’m up to her expectations… I’m sure hers is lowered already.
A thing long expected takes the form of the unexpected when at last it comes
