For the love of swearing

During my first year in Brisbane, I knew this Hongkie who was one of the many undergraduates who stayed at the Mt Gravatt Residential College. He was different. Unlike his counterparts who tend to stick with their own kind, he mingled pretty well with everyone else.

“#@^($&#@!$!^” he shouted from across the dining hall in a tone–one would easily assume as swearing. You see this guy’s ego lied in his ability to swear not constantly but in as many languages as he can. Something he was quite proud of.

While I do mildly swear occasionally, it’s always the type where you would swear to yourself or a non-living object (the reflection of me in the mirror for instance) and not the type where you would direct the swearing at a different person. Probably it is just me but to swear ‘properly’ does require a level of anger and perhaps a pinch of honesty whereby you do really mean what you are saying.

How often do you swear?

swearing is a common thing among urban young adults nowadays don’t you think? i swear. that i do admit. with my friends, it’s a norm but we mean well and just a way of communicating. *smiles sheepishly* but i think i swear in the car a lot while driving cos the traffic is horrendous in KL. but swearing releases stress and that leads to a healthier lifestyle, wouldn’t you agree? ;)
