Figure 1. Maybankard Visa Debit ‘Cherries’
“A new replacement card costs MYR12″ repeated the lady behind the counter for the umpteenth time. Well, twice actually. Unless you include the other guy who earlier on said the same thing when he assisted me in getting me on the waiting list. The lady paused a few seconds as if was she waiting for a reaction. Possibly an outburst by another disgruntled customer who thinks that MYR12 for a new replacement card is a rip off. I nodded. Twice . “It’s alright.” “I probably deserved it.” I thought to myself. I will never ever ever forget my 6-digit PIN number again.
“Are you interested in switching to our new Maybankard Visa Debit? It’s free.” I looked at the new debit card design. It was a horrible one. Why would anyone be interested in a bank card with cherries on it? On my right, sitting on the sofa was a Malay in his late 40s clutching on to his ‘cherry’ debit card brochure. Earlier on, we had a short conversation on the convenience of a debit card and the necessity of five meals a day. With my unpolished Malay vocabulary, I had to confess, at times I couldn’t understand much he was saying. “No lunch, doctor’s orders, very hungry!” were among the words he mumbled or at least what went into my ears. I tell you, he was one excited guy to receive his ‘cherry’ debit card.
Ashamed to say, I got one myself too.

It’s good that you have a debit card. It’s does provide you lot’s of convenience, right?
I never know that cherries are one of the sexual connotations till now. To be honest.

@albert ‘Pop the cherry’ is somewhat a popular phrase carrying this sexual connotation. Perhaps the people who picked the photograph for the card never took this into account.

At least they are not using apples on the design. :)

Hurray, finally you’ve got your own visa debit card (more online shopping??) Well, I think the design will definitely appeal to housewives. Fresh cherries might reminded them to do more grocery shopping :P
I’ve got my own ANZ visa debit card, in pink. The card design probably was one main reason I applied for the card. Rather than applying to other bank to just receive a plain silver card.

Sad to say, the visa debit card doesn’t work with paypal. Lousy bank.

Hinching, I thought you don’t need to link it to your PayPal account anymore if you want to do online shopping. As long you have money in your account, you can shop online! (same process like credit card without giving the credits) thats why they call it VISA debit. I’m sure it’s the same process everywhere.
