Figure 1. Australian Photojournalist 2008
Back in February, I received an email from a design studio I worked previously in Brisbane informing me that they were planning to submit one of my works into Queensland Design On Show awards (formerly known as the Queensland Design Awards) along with several of their best works. I was quite excited. Very.
ku’dos, n. (sl.). Glory, renown. (Gk)
qdos, n (sl.). queensland design on show. The new name for the Queensland Design Awards, initiated and run by the Design Institute of Australia.
My submitted work was a publication design piece for the The Australian Photo Journalist (buy the book here)–the official journal of the Australian Photojournalist’ Association. It was quite the experience working with a team of editors racing towards a deadline. Not to mention the countless Saturdays I returned to the design studio just to nitpick the little stuff which can be improved.
A few weeks ago, I received word that I was among the finalists under the ‘emerging student designers’ category. A big honour, to say the least. To be judged and be recognized by my professional peers was umph all the way. And if that wasn’t enough, my work (despite only as a digital image) was being displayed as part as an exhibition at the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art till the end of the month. On June 13th, the winners were announced at a gala event at the Schonell Theatre ala red is the new black.
The day when I knew the results was one of those key moments in life. That moment in time where you know you did it right and it paid off. I came up as runner up under ‘emerging student designers’.
