The Keningau Road Trip

Ray and Charlotte at the front seat

During a public holiday in December 2009, I went on a road trip to Keningau (map) with Charlotte and her family as a fellow passenger. With Ray as the designated driver who grew up there.

Gunung Emas Balcony

Gunung Emas's Family of Monkeys

Taking the longer, scenic Tambunan route allowed us for a pit stop at the Gunung Emas Restaurant where a cup of Milo and a plate of fried noodles warmed us up as we ascended the mountainous range.

Another noteworthy mention is the stretch of road which used to be part of the old airport’s runway which we drove past on our way there. Embarrassingly, I was asleep when we did.

Kudat Breakfast

Yet another breakfast at a local coffee shop called Kris Win in Keningau. Does anyone know more about this eatery?

Keningau temple

This temple offers a spectacular view of the Keningau township from afar. Even better at night. After this stop, we made an impulse decision to drive towards Tenom for a quick visit. However, we decided to turn around when we realized none of us could find our intended destination.

Old Run-down Shoplots in Keningau

A rare sight you might not see in the city anymore. The township still retains some of its old-school charm in the wooden shoplots around town.

Keningau Market

As the evening approaches, the Keningau night market comes to life with a constant stream of locals. This is the place to be during this time of the day.

Kudat Kap Biang

A light snack before our return to Kota Kinabalu—this is a Pandan-flavoured Kuih Kap Biang with a pinch of coconut shavings and peanut butter as its fillings. Made on the spot.

Chicken wings

On one end of the market lies a selection of stalls offering a variety of grilled food such as satay and the odd delicacy—grilled ‘chicken butt’ on a skewer. You won’t miss it. Just locate where the thick, grey smoke is. We originally planned to return after tasting the Satay Wings from one of the stalls which was famous among the locals.

But did otherwise. It is a common practice to re-grill/reheat the unsold wings from the night before. Therefore it is advisable that one buys only after they start cooking a new batch of fresh wings (usually after 10pm to be on the safe side). We left Keningau around 5pm.
